    yesterday

I finally set the computer up once the water receeded.  then, that night mom and I rented bride and prejudice.  that finished just in time to watch the 1940's pride and prejudice.

    today

the power flickered for a bit, but didn't actual go out.  I figured out my printer problems and now have printing and internet capabilities on my computer.  I also got to see the toyota prius.  there's no key, it's a card you insert, then a button you push.... no shift, it's a little lever on the dashboard that you adjust. to park, you push a button.  there's a screen that monitors where the energy is coming from and tracks your current mileage.  meg said was getting 99 mpg driving around town.   I was offered a chance to drive it, but declined.  very button oriented; it reminded me of the jetsons.  I didn't get a chance to work on any suduko's, but in 10 minutes time before west wing, I managed to put a fan upstairs in the attic, take apart a lamp to change a lightbulb, wash my lunch dishes, put my dinner dishes in the dishwasher, take care of the cookie platter, put the dog out, and heat a cup of cider.  unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to look at any material for teaching 7th grade today.  got through my 8th grade material for the week, but didn't have an opportunity to look at material for the next chapter.

I didn't have an opportunity to do anything fun.  for awhile, I thought I might, but just as well I didn't make plans after all.

    tomorrow

I have to go in early because students have labs that need completion.

p.s. dar williams rocks.  and emily still owes me dar williams cds!

  • I return.... momentarily.   between flooding and power outages, I haven't had internet much of this last week.

before I lose power (again), I'd like to share some student responses to a handout they were completing as they watched a video reviewing magnetism.

How did humans first recognize magnetism?
A small miracle, a rock that had a mind of its own.

What powers was magnetism thought to have?
    a dark force

What happens when a magnetic needle floats in water?
    it points down south

If all objects are made up of +'s and -'s, why can't all things be magnetized?
because some has more + then - ant some more - then + fabric on the outside doesnt atract.

What is the Aurora Borealis and the Aurora Austrailias?
They are where the whole in the atmosphere.
souls of siberian people lived on in the light.

What do certain animals have in their brain to help them navigate?
    sea turtle pigun's butterfly's fishy's

    What are fission and fusion?

How well do you know your geography?
I scored 90%, with an average error of 24 miles in 296 seconds... it helps once you realize they're telling you what state they're giving you and you don't have to guess by the shape.

  • in muggle news, I had a rather silly mishap.  we had progress reports due last week.  apparently I assigned "student unprepared for physical education" to one student.  whoops.

so who isn't in love with the dreaminess that is the world of harry potter?  check out this poster.  additionally, check out these additional trailers at the wb official uk website.  the first trailer is the teaser trailer... still good, so do check it out.  the last two are international trailers and contain a bit of additional footage.  delightful.  absolutely.

more trailers here, including ferret footage. (need non-qiucktime links? fear not. try here.)

"soon we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy."
    -- dumbledore.... oh, dear dumbledore....

it's quite a bit of fun to watch the actors grow as their characters mature.  I remember interviews where the actors shuddered at the prospect of kissing co-actors, now they're looking foward to it.   (transcript at veritaserum)

also this delectible quote from ralph fiennes (voldemorte): "Dan's very good," he said, "working with him was wonderful. Poor guy, he had to be so patient. I had to do all this waffling and talking about how I'm the Master of the Universe and how I'm evil and I'm going to kill him and he has to stand there all tied up, writhing around and groaning with pain while I'm monologuing towards him."

can you imagine the reams of fanfic that will surely be pouring from quills and keyboards with such looks and talent as fiennes cast in the most villaneous role.... tom felton had loads as draco and compared to he-who-must-not-be-named he's nothing.

on october 4th it was announced "that sales of copies of the Harry Potter books have topped the 300 million mark. The books have been translated into 63 languages, including Latin and Welsh." - the leaky cauldron
